Sussex Dolphin Project is a volunteer-driven organisation operated by a team of dedicated marine conservationists. Our committed and talented team works across Sussex and are the lifeblood of our ever growing organisation.

SPCC Ranger (volunteer)
The Role
We are looking for up to seven capable and proactive volunteers to join SDP’s own terrestrial conservation project, the Shoreham Port Conservation Corridor (SPCC). The SPCC is a unique project site, nestled in the industrialised area of Shoreham Port, and bordered by housing, making it an isolated and important first land-fall for migratory butterfly species. This isolated area hosts a surprising number of habitat types, and our goal is to enhance these to increase biodiversity in the urbanised landscape. The ranger role is highly variable, requiring physical land management tasks bringing about real restoration and conservation work. these tasks include:
- Carrying out labour tasks of land management using manual tools.
- Implementing and updating the programme of work in accordance with nature’s requirements, and those of SDP.
- Running surveying and public events within the SPCC.
Essential
- Some experience working with basic gardening equipment.
- Flexible, adaptable and proactive to work around changes in weather conditions, volunteer groups and the needs of the environment on site.
- General understanding of habitat restoration, or willingness to learn.
- Practical and helpful attitude and skills for working on a range of tasks and being on hand around the SDP office.
Desirable
- General or local understanding of species ecology.
- Ability to understand species interactions to represent or enhance lost species.
- Use and certification for use of power licensed equipment such as brush cutter, hedge trimmer.
- Every Wednesday and the occasional weekend.

Communications Officer (volunteer)
The Role
We are looking for a seasoned communicator, ideally with PR and social media experience (although the role can be divided into two separate PR and social media focuses), to assist with the day-to-day communications activities for Sussex Dolphin Project, including:
- Managing Sussex Dolphin Project’s social media profiles across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
- Working with local, national and international press to answer incoming queries.
- Developing stories to drive press coverage around key issues.
- Working with the wider team to promote Sussex Dolphin Project events and boat trips.
- Promoting video and photographic content of cetacean sightings across social media and traditional press channels.
- Working with core Sussex Dolphin Project team to develop communications strategies.
- Working with corporate partners to develop suitable communications campaigns.
Essential
- Experience of working with local, national and international press.
- Experience of managing social media profiles across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
- Proven track record of developing communications campaigns.
- Strong writing skills.
- Content development experience, e.g. confident in developing social media content through platforms such as Canva.
- A passion for marine conservation.
Desirable
- Ideally located in Sussex.
- Ideally experience of working with NGOs.
- Ideally experience of video editing.
- Ideally experience of working with multiple partner organisations.
- Ideally experience of paid social media campaigns.
- 5-10 hours per week.

Events Officer (volunteer)
- Experience of events management.
- Experience of organising volunteers.
- Experience of driving attendance at events.
- Driver’s licence and access to vehicle.
- Availability to attend events in Sussex.
- Experience of working with and managing relationships with NGOs and local government.
- 8 – 10 hours per week plus event attendance at weekends.

Our volunteers frequently attend events across Sussex.
